Who is Beck?
And other musical questions asked by America’s teenagers
If you watched the Grammy’s last night, you were hit by a wave of emotions. Sam Smith got you excited by snatching 2 awards in the first 38 minutes of the show, Pharrell depressed us with his opening of his hit single “Happy”, and confusion swept the nation (or at least twitter) when Beck won album of the year.
It wasn’t just a shock factor when the alternative-rock musician won, people had absolutely no idea who this guy was. The uncertainty caused “Who is Beck” to trend on twitter until early this morning along with an uproar of nasty tweets downgrading the artist.
In case any of you are still wondering who Beck is, he is an alternative rock artist who rose to fame in the 90s. One of his most popular songs is ‘Loser’, which you can listen to here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgSPaXgAdzE
Beck wasn’t the only artist teens weren’t familiar with last night at the awards ceremony.
Tweets were sent out referring to music legend Sir Paul Mccartney as “the guy who sings with Rihanna and Kanye”, and 19 time Grammy winner Tony Bennett was recognized as Lady Gaga’s sugar daddy.
If you don’t know who Paul Mccartney is, do us all a favor and google a little band called “The Beatles”. You might find that they’re “okay”.
Tony Bennett is a traditional pop artist. Hear him croon here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLjXbkSm8B4
The lack of musical knowledge among young people didn’t start at the Grammy’s. When Missy Elliot performed during the Superbowl halftime show, many thought she was a new artist. She responded to the tweets on her personal account:
Perhaps Beck can follow in Missy’s footsteps and let the twitter community know who he is. For now, maybe those clueless can pull out some of their parent’s ancient CDs or cassette tapes and discover the music of the past.
