It’s the time of year when people want to bundle up in ugly Christmas sweaters. Three common stores to find ugly Christmas sweaters near the Downers Grove area are Savers, Goodwill, and Rue 21.
“Personally, I love ugly Christmas sweaters because they are so cozy and just fun. I love having ugly Christmas sweater parties and getting into the Christmas spirit with my friends,” junior Madison Lynch said.
In the Downers Grove area, Savers has the largest vintage variety and selection by far. Their price range starts at $4.99 and goes up to $24.99. According to sales cashier Jim Pickett, Savers started receiving the sweaters right after Halloween. They had about 200-300 sweaters in stock, but sold quickly due to high demand.
“They’re incredible [sweaters], it’s like a new fad,” Pickett said.
For more modern sweaters, Rue 21 is the go-to. There is an equally large selection for both girls’ and boys’ sweaters. The girls’ sweaters were more classic with penguins, gingerbread men, and reindeer. The boys’ sweaters were not as conventional. They have images of SpongeBob, Marilyn Monroe, and graphic tees appearing to be vests. Rue 21’s sweaters cost between $20 and $25.
“The sweaters are pretty popular with the ladies,” Rue 21’s sales associate Indre Borodina said.
Goodwill has the most simple selection out of the three stores. They had simple holly-printed turtlenecks and basic red knit sweaters. Goodwill receives sweaters year-round and stores them in the basement until the winter season. Their sweaters are priced from $4 to $10.
Out of all the stores students might like Savers the most. They can get a simple red sweater for $4.99 or a crazy grandma-looking vest for $24.99.
Friday Dec. 19 Sophomore Class Board is hosting their second anual Holiday Sweater contest, doubling as a canned food drive for the Downers Grove Township Food Pantry. Wear your ugly Christmas sweater and turn in your canned item to the cafeteria during your lunch period.
“I really enjoy Christmas sweaters because they bring more spirit to the holidays and they’re comfortable to wear,” junior Madeline Johnson said.
