For five years in a row, The Omega earned Quill and Scroll’s International 1st place award, and for the past two years, The Omega won Quill and Scroll’s highest honor: the George H. Gallup award.

The student newspaper is evaluated on coverage, writing, editing, photography, design, and adhering to legal and ethical standards. Although the past staff of The Omega has set the bar high in terms of these awards, this year’s staff plans to accomplish similar achievements.

“The success of The Omega is really reliant on the great writing that we always do. I think that this year’s staff is no different, in fact, I think that this year’s staff is pushing themselves even farther than other years have,” Editor in Chief Natalie White said.

Along with Omega awards, individuals on staff are consistently being recognized for their superior work as student journalists. Senior Sidney Lee won the Gold Circle Award from the CSPA (Columbia Scholastic Press Association) for writing the article “Society says, ‘Asian A’s Don’t Count.’” This article sheds light on the cultural standards and stereotypes of Asian students.

Similarly, senior Sophia Di Iorio won 1st place in the 2018 JEA (Journalism Education Association) logo contest. She was awarded a prize of $100 along with her art design featured as the official logo for the Chicago Journalism Convention. Her logo was inspired by combining Chicago architecture and a symbolism for stories.

¨It was supposed to be a shout out to the Sears tower in the Chicago skyline. I thought a city literally made of stories would be a cool representation of what they were looking for,¨ Di Iorio said.

The Omega continues to achieve high honors, and the publication looks forward to another successful year.
