Senior Caden Chiarelli has been a dominant presence this season for boys football and wrestling, playing a key role in the football team’s final four playoff run while also being a state qualifier in boys wrestling.
Chiarelli earned all-conference honors as a team captain for the football team, making his impact on both sides of the ball. As a safety, he finished among the team leaders in tackles, consistently finding himself around the action. Offensively, he delivered in key moments, scoring crucial touchdowns during the team’s playoff push.
“He’s one of the toughest players I’ve ever coached,” boys football head coach Joseph Horeni said. “He’s a difference maker and a leader on the field.”
During the winter season, Chiarelli carried that same intensity into wrestling. A team captain and all-conference selection, he qualified for state and finished his career among the top ten in DGN history in all-time wins.
Chiarelli’s success is rooted in more than results, as his coaches credit his ability to respond to adversity.
“He fought through failures and disappointments without making excuses and only worked harder to reach his goals,” boys wrestling head coach Christopher McGrath said. “He is a true role model of perseverance and persistence.”
That resilience, however, was not built alone. Throughout his career, Chiarelli leaned on the relationships he built with teammates and those closest to him, forming bonds that extended beyond competition.
“I will mostly miss the friends and connections that I’ve made,” Chiarelli said. “I’ve played in Downers Grove with the same people for so long, which is pretty awesome.”
Those relationships, along with his commitment to improving, played a major role in his development as an athlete.
“I’d say a lot of my family and friends have helped me get to where I am,” Chiarelli said. “Along with a lot of hard work and dedication to keep getting better.”
With that support system behind him, Chiarelli now turns his focus to the next level. Chiarelli will continue his wrestling career at North Central College, bringing with him his determination and relentless drive to improve.
“I’m going to miss DGN, but I’m excited to continue my journey,” Chiarelli said. “They have a great program and will help me grow to become a national champion.”
