As temperatures start to rise here in Downers Grove, the excitement builds for the upcoming festivals in the area. For students at DGN, the short trip to the city to enjoy music, food, and so much more is a staple of the summer. However, the season of music events poses the question: which festival is the best?
Lollapalooza in Chicago is a festival with a big variety of artists and different music genres. The festival takes place in Grant Park, during the first weekend of August. Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash, typically just referred to as Summer Smash, is another festival that takes place in Bridgeview, Illinois, at the SeatGeek Stadium, a change from their previous location in Douglas Park. The festival is three days long and stems specifically from rap and hip hop music. The event organizer and famous music video director, Cole Bennett, has artists like Travis Scott, Glorilla, Lil Uzi Vert, and so many other performers on the main stage, making for ultra-popular headliners that draw the biggest crowds. Finally, there is Windy City Smokeout, located in the lots of the United Center and throughout the streets of Madison and Wood. Windy City Smokeout offers an authentic country experience, from the music to the BBQ.
For many teens, money is only spent on things that bring joy, memories, and, sometimes, use. Summer Smash tickets are by far the most expensive tickets out of the three festivals. For a one day pass, tickets start at $170, and a three day pass starts at $400. Similarly, Lolla has a similar one day pass that starts at about $180 plus fees, for a four day pass tickets start at $400 plus fees. Compared to Summer Smash, a four day pass to Lolla gives you more “bang for your buck”. Finally, Windy City Smokeout provides one of the cheapest options for a festival, with prices starting at $100, and a four day pass costing $300.
The Omega held a student poll at DGN, and, with student responses, we have found the answer to which festival is the best.
Most students preferred Lollapalooza over the others, which is the best deal by far for a festival.
