POSING WITH THEIR PLAQUES: Club swim coach Judy Busse accepts athlete hall of fame awards for Burke and Haley Sims alongside Garrett and Tommy Edwards

On Saturday, Jan. 16, DGN inducted four members into its Athletic Hall of Fame: Tommy Edwards (Class of 2004), Garrett Edwards (Class of 2006), Burke Sims (Class of 2009) and Haley Sims (Class of 2011).

The Edwards brothers accomplishments both include first team All-State Football Team, All WSC Football Team and All WSC Basketball Team.

Tommy Edwards is also being inducted for being on the All WSC Baseball Team and for rushing over 1000 yards in 2002 and 2003.

In addition to the accomplishments he shares with his brother, Garrett Edwards is also being inducted for playing football at University of Illinois, being a member of the 2008 Rose Bowl team and becoming the defensive captain in 2009.

The second set of siblings being honored in the Athletic Hall of Fame are Burke and Haley Sims. Both athletes were state champions in swimming.Burke won the 500-yard freestyle in 2009, setting a state record, and Haley won the 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard I.M. and set a state record with her team in the 200-yard Medley Relay in 2010.

Burke Sims became a varsity swimmer at Stanford University and was a NCAA qualifier in the 800-yard freestyle relay, and an Olympic Trials Qualifier for the 200-meter freestyle in 2012.

Haley Sims’ list of accomplishments is the most extensive out of the four inductees.

Haley won a total of 14 state medals in her time at DGN and was ISA Senior High School Swimmer of the Year in 2010. She was a 13-time High School All American and All Academic American. To achieve this award, one must be both exemplary in athletics while also keeping a GPA of above a 3.5.

Outside of her DGN accomplishments, Haley also attended Stanford upon graduation and swam on their varsity team for four years. Furthermore, Haley qualified for the Olympic trials in 2008 in the 100-meter butterfly, and then again in 2012 for the 100-meter butterfly and the 50-meter freestyle.

To be selected for the North High Hall of Fame, alumni must be nominated. Anyone can nominate an athlete, coach or administrator to the Athletic Hall of Fame. However to nominate an athlete, the nominee must be out of high school for four years and have earned a varsity letter in high school or college. The committee reviews all nominations made, and selects athletes annually.
