Each year, the Grove Express Foundation makes it a goal to bring people together on Thanksgiving day. By hosting the Grove Express 5k, formerly known as the Bonfield Express, the Foundation allows people to come together to run for something bigger themselves. By participating in the event, runners raise money for the D99 high schools and D58 elementary schools.
“I think it builds a sense of community,” Downers Grove resident Deborah Stavancovich said. “Getting out there and walking to help a cause is the biggest reason I participate.”
With over 7,000 people running in the race Nov. 26 of this year, one of the highest numbers they’ve had, it’s clear the event has gained popularity over the 5 years since the Foundation took over in 2021. Many people see this as a chance for Thanksgiving traditions to blossom, and take advantage of the opportunity to run for a good cause with their loved ones.
“This is our third year participating in the 5k,” Downers Grove resident Nancy Lee Martica said. “It’s a nice way to have fun and it turns out to be a great tradition with your friends, so it means a lot to us.”
Despite frigid temperatures, the 5k still managed to rally up a record attendance for its fifth anniversary. In 2024, it was recorded that the Grove Express Foundation had raised over $700,000 to put towards the education of the next generations. Whether it be for scholarships going to individuals, or to the schools for further funding, the citizens of Downers Grove come together each year to support the community’s schools and their students. That amount of money raised every year continues to grow exponentially. With additional funding from their sponsors, the Grove Express 5k is able to leave a lasting impression on the schools and students of the Downers Grove community.
“Even though it’s cold out, it still means a lot to show up and participate,” junior Alena Mossman said. “We bring a lot of other people to join in so we can not only have fun with friends, but raise more money for a good cause.”
Community members of Downers Grove keep the 5k alive by participating in each race. After going on for 22 years, the tradition in town has yet to dwindle. As the registry continues to grow, the Grove Foundation hopes to expect more money to be able to fund a bit more for the schools of our community.
“This is a great excuse to get up, go outside, and move your body,” Downers Grove resident Ashley Weaver said. “It’s been a tradition of ours for years, and it feels great to give back to the next generation of students.”
