Students, families, and staff packed into the Commons after school as DGN celebrated National Signing Day Nov. 12, recognizing seniors who officially committed to continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level. The event highlighted years of hard work, practice, and dedication. National Signing Day is a nationwide event where high school athletes officially sign their National Letter of Intent, securing their spot on a college athletic roster.
“I’m feeling so excited for the future,” senior and girls swim team member Emily Weingust said. “But I’m sad to leave my teammates at DGN.”
This year’s ceremony hosted two girls from the swim team, both of whom committed to continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Weingust will continue swimming at George Washington University, while senior Katerina Vitale will compete at Lewis University.
“I feel great after signing, and I’m really excited,” Vitale said. “I want to thank the coaches, my teammates, and friends for making it the best four years. They have supported me through the tough times and made me laugh every day.”
As the two swimmers celebrated their commitments, both reflected on the work it took to reach this moment.
“It feels amazing to see all the hard work pay off,” Weingust said. “There were so many early mornings and late afternoon practices, but moments like this make everything seem worth it.”
This milestone marked not only individual achievements for Vitale and Weingust but also acknowledged the community that has supported them, including the friends, family, and coaches who watched with admiration as these athletes continued to push themselves throughout their high school careers.
“Both Emily and Kat were two of the hardest workers on the team,” swim coach Elisabeth Stanley said. “I have no doubt they will continue to excel and find great success as they carry their dedication and talent into their college careers. I can’t wait to follow their journey.”
The ceremony wrapped up with cheers and congratulations as the swimmers finished signing and celebrated with their families and teammates. For both athletes, it was a moment that marked the end of one chapter and the start of another. Congratulations and best of luck to both of these girls.
