The Government Club headed to the city of Chicago to debate the current Supreme Court Case of Chiles v. Salazar Friday, November 14th.
The DGN Government club is often used as a platform for students to discuss civics issues, and the recent field trip has been an opportunity for them to do so.
“I am in DGN Government club because I think it’s super important to practice civil engagement in order to maintain a respectful and prosperous society and community at our school,” said junior Nora Karam.
At the Chicago-Kent College of Law, DGN students met with law students and discussed actions that could be taken in a court of law regarding the Chiles case. This gave the students hands-on experience with the judicial system.
“I think it is necessary to learn about government and how the different branches work,” said junior Ivana Jakelja.
The Chicago-Kent field trip was a great opportunity for DGN juniors and seniors to further their discussion skills, and come to consensus in a real law school environment.
“This field trip was important because it helped engage students in civil discourse and it was really exciting to meet all the new people, and law professors.” Karam said.
Shortly after meeting new people, and making new connections, conversations emerged.
“Talking about a topic with other kids from different schools and learning about their opinions,” junior Robby Hayes said.
One major part of these field trips is to gain perspective, make connections with other people interested in public policy, and to broaden students’ horizons within their field of interest. The DGN Government Club did just that, in Chicago this past Friday.
