DGN Class of 2024 Athletes of the Year: Owen Thulin

Senior Owen Thulin captained the varsity football and basketball teams this year and helped lead both teams to impressive seasons during his senior campaign.

Thulin has been playing varsity football and basketball since his sophomore year and earned all-conference, all-area honors, and was named the team MVP for the Trojan football team. In basketball, Thulin is tied with teammates Jack Stanton and Jake Riemer for the most wins in program history, amassing 79 wins over three years.

“I can’t speak any higher of a person than Owen,” boys’ basketball head coach Jim Thomas said. “You can see how serious he was about being successful. From a high school coaching perspective, you don’t get players that have those tangibles and intangibles.”

Whether it was on the field or the court, Thulin’s playmaking ability and IQ made him a force to be reckoned with.

“If I could describe him in one word it would be ‘Unicorn’,” Thomas said. “You hear coaches talk about players like Owen, but in my 17 years, he’s the only one I’ve had. If I continue to coach I may never see another player like him.”

Despite his historic high school career, Thulin hopes his legacy is much bigger than team records and stats.

“I want coaches to remember me as a leader and use me as a good example for other players, and I hope my teammates remember me as someone that would always have their back and always wanted the best for them,” Thulin said.

Looking back at the last four years, Thulin cherishes the opportunities he had as a Trojan.

“I wish that I took more time to soak everything in and realize everything that we did,” Thulin said. “I also wish I would’ve cherished playing with my brothers more because not many people get the opportunity to play with two of their brothers.”

Above all, he will miss spending time with his teammates whether it be on the field, the court, or in the classroom.

“Both teams taught me why team sports are so hard,” Thulin said. “I think I’ll miss my teammates the most and watching the town get together to watch us.”
