MODERN JAM: Overhead shot of Travis Scott’s concert

Imagine, buying tickets in August, eagerly waiting for December 15 to roll around. And once it does your outfit is picked out, hair tools hot and ready to be used, music blasting, and vibes ready to be uplifted to another level. Then suddenly your phone rings and it’s your best friend calling to let you know he canceled. Social media was livid. After days of confusion Travis Scott gets on X to explain the reason he missed his first Chicago show was because he was stuck on an airplane runway.

Now fast forward to January 3. Travis is on X posting he is showing up to Chicago tonight no matter what. So, all the energy I felt that Friday after school, came back. Once I arrived at the United Center there were lines wrapped double around the building to get in. Even though it was 30 degrees and I was in a crop top, the anticipation of what I was about to experience kept me warm.

After 40 minutes of waiting outside and another 30 minutes waiting at our seats inside, the opener came out. I was under the impression that rapper Teezo Touchdown would be the first part of the show, however, my heart stopped when I saw one of my favorite artists, Don Toilver walk onto the stage. He played for a decent amount of time and did a good job of getting the audience hyped for Travis. Overall he was amazing and I was happy with the songs he picked to sing that night.

I will say it took Travis a while to come out after Don Toliver finished. Although this is pretty normal, I just wanted to hear his voice in person. Anyone who has me on snap can testify how thrilled I was when Travis came on stage. I never screamed louder.

Throughout the night he played a mix of songs from his new album Utopia, as well as his other mainstream songs. I can confidently say Travis Scott is one of the best performers I have ever seen. He had lots of energy and always wanted fans on the stage with him. On the topic of the stage, it was insane. The detail and craft put into it made the show so memorable.

One song that will stick with me is “MY EYES.” Before he sang it he told the crowd this was the song that meant the most to him. Even though rap concerts are full of non-stop rouse, it gives us a connection to Travis that makes him more than just a stream on our phone.

And of course, it is not a Circus Maximus Tour without Travis’s song “Fein” being played more than once. He repeated the song 11 times throughout his entire show.

All in all, the concert was everything I could have asked for. My expectations were exceeded and it was an experience I will never forget. If you love Travis Scott, then I suggest going to his concert later in January. I know I will be there again!
