American Sniper drew large crowds at the box office grossing $200.1 million in its first five weeks. The Clint Eastwood directed film received criticism and drew controversy from critics in Hollywood.
The movie depicts the life of Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), a bronco rider turned Navy Seal sniper. He is deployed to Iraq, leaving behind a pregnant wife in the U.S. He immediately sees action, while covering platoons of marines, doing house by house searches through the streets of Baghdad. After multiple tours, his confirmed kill count earns the title “The Legend” from his fellow soldiers. However, Kyle begins to show signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after he finishes final last tour.
The movie has been questioned by many American movie critics. “A month after seeing it, you might still be wrestling with whether it’s powerful, profound, or propaganda” Entertainment Weekly Critic Chris Nashawaty said.
This is where I think many of the critics misunderstand Eastwood’s motive. The film has nothing to do with the morality of those wars; it is simply about a tragic story of soldier with PTSD. Viewers are shown the reality of the life of our soldiers and are shown how much their actions overseas can affect their lives at home.
