Sophomore Aidan Metzl, a member of the D99 hoops basketball team, Special Olympics track & field team, and SEASPAR swim and bowling team, is on a roll this season. Metzl was awarded Athlete of the Year at the SEASPAR 2024 Believe & Achieve Recognition Banquet for his enthusiasm, passion, and talent for sports. SEASPAR is a special education recreation program.
“This award isn’t just about talent; it’s about embodying sportsmanship, teamwork, and a thirst for adventure,” SEASPAR said via Instagram. “Aidan’s kindness, eagerness to learn, and unwavering dedication make him a true inspiration to us all.”
The SEASPAR banquet was filled with Metzl’s past coaches, parents, and supporters.
“I was there when he won the SEASPAR award, and it was so rewarding to see everyone cheer him on,” D99 Hoops coach and Adaptive PE Leader Annie Pleune said. “I get to see the work he puts in first hand and I can say there is no one more deserving than him.”
Metzl has been a dedicated athlete both in and out of school; especially during Adaptive PE, where he has become a leader in class.
“He always has a positive attitude and positive outlook on every single activity. He works really hard and makes the most of every opportunity,” Adaptive PE teacher Lindsey Giannone said.
Metzl’s favorite sport is basketball, and he is on Team Two on the D99 hoops basketball team.
“Aidan has a special blend of athleticism, leadership, and competitive drive. Aidan helps lead our team by having a positive team-first attitude, working hard, practicing on his own, and being willing to do whatever it takes to help his team,” Team Two D99 hoops basketball coach Arthur Drenth said.
Metzl was recognized for his exemplary performance in sports, and he’s just getting started. When asked who he thanked for his success, Metzl thanked his parents who attended every game with enthusiasm for not only him but all members of the team.
Metzl is only a sophomore, yet he is ready to continue dominating in every sport he competes in. His motivation, however, isn’t winning. Metzl says his favorite thing about participating in sports is having fun with his teammates and coaches.
