If one were to find themselves at Carnegie Hall, NYC, on March 2, 2015, they would see over 350 District 99 students taking the stage.
At 8 p.m. “New York Nouveau” would begin, featuring students from both DGN and DGS, as well as alumni from both schools and faculty members.
“Many of the pieces were selected because of specific ties to New York. Some of the selections were picked by our soloists … many of them DGN or DGS alumni,” fine arts department chair person Brayer Teague said.
Most high school band students are not given the opportunity to play at Carnegie Hall, a world renowned music hall, in front of hundreds of anonymous people.
“For the students, to perform at Carnegie is to perform in a historically important venue, where the world’s most talented musicians have all performed,” fine arts teacher Jennifer Mullen said.
“I hope that students will be inspired to hold high standards for themselves and for their ensembles. I hope that they will leave with a sense of pride, but also with a sense of what is possible with determined practice,” Mullen said.
