Downers Grove’s Tivoli Theatre premiered “Interstellar” in 35mm film. Interstellar is a space epic about one man’s quest to save his family. In this movie, Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is asked to do the impossible, save his family and all of mankind by venturing through a black hole, with no guarantees on his return.
The 35mm film format has been phased out by most theaters across the world. It is estimated that less than 30 percent of all movie theaters still have 35 mm projectors.
While IMAX is an impressive film format, “Interstellar” in 35mm has the feel of an old time space movie like ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ or ‘Alien’ which made the experience feel all the more authentic.
“Interstellar” was visually stunning with fantastic visual effects and an excellent audio accompaniment. Despite the display, this movie makes you think about our place in the galaxy and how small our world is in general.
With the older film format and the theater itself you feel like you are sitting in a different time and place. It seemed strange as I was leaving the theater and walking to my car, thinking of what I would do in Cooper’s shoes.
“Interstellar” will be shown at the Tivoli through the end of November.
