DGN varsity girls volleyball hosted a home match against OPRF Oct. 4. Unlike normal matches, DGN partnered with “Lights of Love,” a foundation which raises money to support grieving families. This organization sells illuminated trees around the holiday season to light up neighborhoods in remembrance of lost loved ones.
“It’s a really nice community organization, and it brings families a lot of comfort during the holidays,” senior Alyssa Walters said.
Walters, whose older brother Mason passed away in September of 2021, plays varsity volleyball. Mason Walters, who also played for the DGN volleyball program, has been missed by many in the community. During the Oct. 4 match, representatives from “Lights of Love” presented the Walters family with flowers in remembrance of Mason.
“I’m happy we were able to do that for the Walters family, especially with Alyssa being a senior,” sophomore volleyball coach Erin Moore said. “It was just nice to be able to come together to pay tribute to her brother, her family, and continue to support Alyssa.”
Moore, who coached Alyssa Walters as a sophomore, feels especially touched by the “Lights of Love” foundation.
“I appreciate what they do for the community. I think it’s a great resource for families who have lost children to help guide them through their grieving process,” Moore said.
The illuminated trees, bought by community members in support of this organization, are put up around local areas.
“It’s really nice to drive through the neighborhood and see all the trees up,” Alyssa Walters said. “It reminds me that everyone is so supportive.”
She not only feels the support of her community from the foundation’s holiday trees, but also from the kindness of her teammates.
“When Mr. Heinz was talking about the organization and how it connects to my family. I felt very supported by my teammates,” Alyssa Walters said. “They all hugged me.”
