The transition from summer to fall causes a dramatic shift to the atmosphere of Downers Grove. Chillier weather, warm colors, cozy sweaters, and most importantly the iconic flavors and scents. Arguably the most popular of the season is pumpkin spice. Contradicting the name, this beloved flavor has no pumpkin in it, but a blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves. It is easy to get addicted to, and many brands use that to their advantage, advertising them as “limited edition” or “seasonal flavors” to further urge people to buy. Each year more new and innovative products containing the flavor are created. But what about this year? Let’s take a look.
At the top of the list, Starbucks is one of the largest franchises who takes part in this pumpkin spice craze. On Thursday, August 22, they released their take on the seasonal taste with both drinks and bakery items. A variety of either iced or hot teas and coffees contain the notable fall flavors. The Pumpkin Spice Latte, Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai, and the Baked Apple Croissant are by far the most popular. Both of the drinks are topped with either whipped cream or pumpkin flavored sweet cream cold foam, and a sprinkling of pumpkin spice toppings. They all contain milk, but the chai has a base of tea and the latte has a base of coffee. As for the croissant, it contains a heated apple filling encased in layers of soft croissant dough and is baked until golden and crispy.
Although the store isn’t primarily known for its food, Target will also be contributing to this year’s assortment of seasonal goods. Their beverage items are infused with pumpkin to transform everyday essentials to “limited edition.” This includes their ready made coffee, creamers, coffee grounds, whipped toppings, and coffee pods. The vast majority of these products are supplied by big name brands such as Starbucks, Dunkin’, and Good & Gather. One fan favorite which will be returning are the Pillsbury Pumpkin Spice Rolls as well as sugar cutout cookies in a variety of Halloween and autumn themed shapes.
Lastly is the infamous Trader Joe’s with a plethora of delicious and unique items in this category. Containing dinners, drinks, snacks, desserts, and more, it has one of the largest varieties to choose from. Their Honey Roasted Pumpkin Ravioli is one of the more unique dinners you can find in the freezer aisle. They are stuffed with savory pumpkin and ricotta cheese, providing the perfect autumn meal. If you’re looking for an easy way to enjoy a delicious baked treat, their Pumpkin Bread & Muffin mix is the way to go. As for breakfast, spread their pumpkin cream cheese over one of the pumpkin infused bagels.
Overall, if you’re a fan of seasonal foods you should definitely check out these stores!
