Sleeping in until 11 am, lying in bed all day, and skipping out on homework might be a relaxing way to spend a day off of school. But is it the best way to spend a senior ditch day? DGN seniors have a total of four “official” ditch days scheduled for the 2023-2024 school year. Some students spend their days at home watching TV, others go out to breakfast or lunch with their friends. While four days of skipping school is a great way to break up the senioritis, having one senior ditch day of whole class fun and activities is a better way to make senior year memorable.
Compared to neighboring high schools, DGN is severely lacking in the student planning of ditch days. At Lyons Township High School located in Western Springs, seniors have multiple ditch days however one of them is always dedicated to senior sunrise. All seniors are invited to Lake Michigan, to watch the sunrise and spend the day at the beach. This trip has been going on for years and gives seniors something to look forward to. DGS has a similar tradition, while they have multiple ditch days the last one is designated for a trip down to the dunes.
With multiple senior ditch days a year, teachers can be unforgiving and inflexible about school work and missing class. Lessons continue to go on and homework is given out. However, if DGN only participated in one ditch day, I believe teachers would be more lenient and understanding.
DGN seniors have made lifelong friendships and have survived four years of high school. The best way to treat the graduating class is to have a special day of celebration. Future senior classes should make an effort to be more inclusive and more adventurous on their days off.
