Seasonal Selection: The Omega’s Valentines

February 9, 2021

Love is in the air! A major part of Valentine’s Day is enjoying festively sweet treats, such as candy and specialty drinks. For this mini-episode of Seasonal Selections, Editor-in-Chief Amelia Carlson, Sports Editor Vanessa Lopez, and Photography Editor Olivia Shirk went to Dunkin’ Donuts to review their Valentine’s Day-themed Macchiatos.

Pink Velvet Macchiato: Debuting on Dunkin’ Donuts’ Valentines Day Menu in 2020, the pink macchiato consists of the restaurants’ signature espresso and a sweet red velvet cake flavor. The macchiato comes in both hot and cold, but I chose the cold option to see the contrast between the dark espresso and the vibrant pink milk. After mixing the drink, the unique flavor of cake batter and frosting came on full blast, which was something I couldn’t compare to any other drinks. The bitter espresso and the sweetness blend nicely, creating a cohesive taste. If you’re looking for an overly sweet, but festive drink, I recommend the pink velvet macchiato as a fun treat! 9/10

Mocha Macchiato: Dunkin’ Donuts introduced a new, moodier companion to the Pink Velvet Macchiato for the 2020 Valentine’s Day Menu, the Mocha Macchiato. The macchiato offers a combination of bitter espresso and savory chocolate flavors, a nod to the Valentine’s Day flavor spectrum. The contrast between the espresso and the chocolate milk was much less impressive compared to the Pink Velvet Macchiato, but I credited it to the similar colors each layer had. However, the macchiato did not live up to its expectation. The flavor wasn’t anything special, it just tasted like espresso with the chocolate flavor barely making itself known. The Mocha Macchiato is the perfect festive drink for coffee lovers who don’t necessarily like the sweetness that comes with the holidays. 8/10
