After years of co-writing and singing the hooks of mainstream pop hits, British singer-songwriter Charli XCX explores themes of love, rebellion, and independence with an irresistible pop-punk sound through her sophomore album Sucker.
Sucker is far from a traditional pop album. A majority of the tracks, such as “Sucker” and “Break the Rules” incorporate the use of guitar riffs and brash choruses to give the album a punk rock vibe. “I don’t want to go to school/I just want to break the rules.”
Unlike Sucker, many of the pop albums of 2014 shared the same synchronized beats, hooks, and cliché love songs and girl power anthems. Charli embraces her differences with Sucker both musically and as an artist. She abandons bubble-gum pop beats for edgy tracks that reveal her own personal experiences on fame and becoming a mainstream artist.
Despite the album’s punk sound, Charli manages to include a few catchy pop tunes on the tracklist. Her top ten hit “Boom Clap” from The Fault in Our Stars soundtrack was a commercial success and is Sucker’s best performing single thus far.
Sucker is a bold and brilliant creative success that establishes Charli XCX as both a genius and a threat in the pop music industry.
