UNDER CONSTRUCTION: Construction signs dotted Grant Street and Highland Street from Main Street down to Washington Street.
The village of Downers Grove began a series of construction projects on the surrounding streets of the Main Street student and staff parking lot this past April. Both Grant and Highland Street renovations are part of the village’s first phase of the 2014 Road Maintenance program, which covers 175 miles of roads in Downers Grove.
Although the village expected the construction to be complete by August, both Grant Street and Highland Ave were crowded with orange traffic signs, crane machines, and unpaved roads. Specifically, the cracks and bumps from the unfinished road were an obstacle for some, including a cross country runner senior Claire Schneider.
Schneider tripped and fell on the broken pavement near the intersection of Grant and Highland Ave during cross country practice, ultimately receiving a staph infection in her knee from her injuries. The injury caused Schneider to miss almost two weeks of her season.
According to a construction update on the Downers Grove Village website, the sod placement on Grant Street and its surrounding areas is complete as of Oct. 10., approximately two months after the original completion date.
