At least twice a week, while driving eastbound on Ogden Ave., you may have seen a man with a large wooden cart that is filled with hundreds of metal sculptures. This insightful man goes by the name of “Randell Richey,” who has more than just his art to share with the world.
Randell Richey, the (universal) Cross Maker, out of repurposed materials, sets out to create spiritual reminders that inspire curiosity revolving around the cross. Richey graduated from DGN in 1978 and currently resides in Westmont.
He has been making objects out of metal for as long as he can remember, but especially within the past decade has he started to create sculptures that have a lot of meaning to him.
“My focus and mindset as a Mystic Cross maker is a personal story of redemption and trans-Eucharist transformation into a new creation. That enters the world stage with a humbling, divine, and humorous cross comedy as I roll on down the road pushing my cart for eternity, but also as a push cart Catholics Divine comedy,” Richey said.
Richeys’ journey through making these many different crosses has expanded his knowledge about himself and his relationship with the cross. This experience has made him a very content person who sets out everyday to strike joy into the lives of the busy drivers who make the daily trek down Ogden Ave. It does not matter if you agree or disagree with his religious beliefs because he loves to talk to people about anything. If you ever need anyone to talk to or are purely interested in him and his art, don’t hesitate to stop and talk with him, he will love it.
