The girls golf team heads to state Oct. 18 and 19 after coming in fifth as a team at sectionals Oct. 7. They shot a 326, putting them in second place and sending them to state.
This is Matthew Dillard’s second season as the golf coach, and he has had two great seasons.
“Just us getting to state was a big deal for us, so that was our goal for the season,” girls golf coach Dillard said.
Junior Lexi Fertig placed fifth individually at sectionals and shot a 76. She is optimistic that they will do well at state and feels very accomplished and proud of the team.
“Last year we were so close, we were two strokes away. So this year to finally make it, it was like we did it,” Fertig said.
This year, the team got second place at sectionals, leaving a gap of 22 strokes between them and the third place finalists. They will be one of 12 teams at state and they hope to advance to the second day where only eight teams will remain. The team has already surpassed their expectations, so from this point forward it is all about them just enjoying this well deserved end to the season.
“This year we are more focused on just having fun and kind of taking in the experience. And I definitely think we can do really well down there if everyone keeps their head in the right spot,” Fertig said.
Mentally it can be very overwhelming dealing with pressure to succeed, so now it is time for the team to embrace all that they worked toward. With so much already achieved, Dillard gives this advice to his team as they head to state.
“Just play golf. Just be yourself and that’s fine and whatever happens, happens,” Dillard said.
