Common’s Cafe Grand Opening

September 2, 2021

Lattes, Cappuccinos, muffins, and donuts are just a few treats that were made readily available for student purchase in the new cafe. Located between the cafeteria and the commons, the cafe opened up Sept. 1 with high anticipation from the students.

Peggy Feldmeier helped to open the cafe and train the service staff so that they can eventually make caramel macchiatos, chai teas, and fruit smoothies for the staff and students. She also works at DGS assisting in their cafe.

“We are very busy at South. Today so far with North opening, [students] are just coming up to see what we have. But at South, we are swamped,” Feldmeier said.

The coffee bar at South has been open since the first week of school, allowing Feldmeier to learn more about the machinery and better prepare herself to open the cafe at DGN.

Although she is most excited about the iced lattes coming at the end of September, senior Isa Novotny purchased a cinnamon apple muffin during her third-period study hall and was pleasantly surprised with its “Starbucks quality.”

Novotny was looking forward to the opening of the cafe, not only for the all-day snack availability but also to feed the student body’s caffeine cravings.

“I think it is going to keep students more awake and attentive,” Novotny said of the caffeinated drinks.

According to Feldmeier, the coffee bar will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will begin selling iced drinks near the end of Sept. Students can also buy sandwiches and salads for a quick lunch option.
