‘90s nostalgia enhances fall play

The school’s production of “She Kills Monsters” (which was performed from November 17 to 19) is the amusing story of Agnes Evans (Isabelle LaBianco), a girl who is trying to make peace with the death of her sister Tilly Evans (Ellie Cawthorne), who she was never close with.

As Agnes is unpacking Tilly’s room she discovers a Dungeons & Dragons campaign and decides to play it to help better understand her late sister’s interests. She enlists the help of comic book clerk Chuck (Arron Hanson) to be her Dungeon Master and guide her through the fantasy world of New Landia.

Agnes joins forces with her sister Tilly’s character, Satan’s daughter Lilith (Olivia Morrow), a dark elf Kaliope (Phoebe Covey), and the slacker demon Orcus to try and get Tilly’s soul back from the five-headed dragon Tiamat.

As the game progresses, the lines between reality and the game are blurred as Agnes gets more into the game. (The play goes back and forth from Agnes venting to her guidance counselor friend Vera in her office to battling bugbears in the woods in a flash.)

Much of the humor from the play comes from the over-the-top violence such as when a fairy rips out a poor adventure’s throat, or when Miles the Gelatinous Cube (Christian Clements) swallows another adventurer and burps out his limbs.

Another high point of the play was Orcus, played by junior Kyle Schirle. Orcus is a retired demon who instead of fighting off adventurers in his lair, wants to watch television all day. He sells Tilly’s soul for a DVR to enhance his television watching experience.

In a play filled to the brim with 90s nostalgia, Orcus serves as one of the driving forces, talking about watching such television shows as “Quantum Leap”, “Twin Peaks”, and “Friends”.

A high point of the play is the 90s soundtrack that plays during scene breaks and fight scenes. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana blasts over the speakers during the bugbear fight scene and “Testify” by Rage Against the Machine opens the play during the first fight sequence.

The school’s production of “She Kills Monsters” uses 90s nostalgia and Dungeons & Dragons as a backdrop to a play packed with action, comedy, and a lot of heart.
