World Series game seven play-by-play
November 15, 2016
The 2012 Chicago Cubs were the second worst team in baseball, with a record of 61-101. This year, the Cubs regular season record was 103-58-1, and now they’re World Champions.
The first inning of Game 7 started off with a bang, thanks to Dexter Fowler hitting a leadoff round-tripper. This home run was the first run Indians pitcher Corey Kluber allowed at home during the entire postseason.
Indians designated hitter Carlos Santana tied the game up in the third inning with an RBI single off Kyle Hendricks.
With two outs in the fifth inning and a runner on first, Joe Maddon replaced Hendricks with Game 5 starting pitcher Jon Lester. The Indians went on to score two runs that inning.
Indians pitcher Andrew Miller was not his typical dominant self, giving up two runs, including a solo homer to Cubs catcher David Ross, who is the oldest player to hit a home run in a Game 7 of the World Series.
With a man on base and two outs in the eighth inning, Indians centerfielder Rajai Davis stepped in against hard-throwing left-hander Aroldis Chapman and cranked a two-run homerun to tie the game at 6.
The game was set to go into extra innings, but the umpiring crew called for a rain delay upon the conclusion of nine innings. After a 17-minute wait, the game resumed in the top of the 10th inning.
Cubs designated hitter Kyle Schwarber started off the 10th with a single. Albert Almora pinch ran for him, representing the go-ahead run. The next batter, Kris Bryant, lifted a ball to the warning track. Almora, a savvy baserunner, tagged up and took second base.
The Indians intentionally walked Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo. With no outs, Ben Zobrist ripped a double to left field that scored Almora and put Rizzo on third. Indians’ closer Cody Allen intentionally walked Addison Russell with Miguel Montero due up next. Montero singled, scoring another run to bring the score 8-6 in favor of the Cubs.
Cubs relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. started the 10th, striking out first baseman Mike Napoli, inducing a Jose Ramirez groundout, and walking Brandon Guyer. Rajai Davis singled in Guyer to make the score 8-7. Mike Montgomery relieved Edwards to get the final out.
Montgomery worked Michael Martinez to a 1-1 count. Martinez then grounded to Bryant at third base, who could be seen smiling ear-to-ear before he even fielded the ball. He threw over to Rizzo to solidify the Chicago Cubs as 2016 World Series Champions.
