For the first time in the history of the publication, The Omega Staff took home the highest honor given by the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA): The Pacemaker award.
The Pacemaker is judged by professional journalists and is based off of six components: coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics.
In addition to winning the Pacemaker award at the NSPA convention this month, staff members placed individually in Write Off competitions. Simone Burns, Abbe Murphy, and Bruce Tanlim earned an Excellent for their Online News Package, Damian Margarites earned an Excellent in Press Law and Ethics, Michael Rivera earned an Excellent in Commentary Writing, Eric Splavec earned an Excellent in Review Writing, Nicole Williams earned an Excellent in News Editing/Headline Writing, Katie Callaghan earned an Honorable Mention in News Writing, and Rachel Krusenoski earned an Honorable Mention in Newspaper Layout.
Along with awards from NSPA, In Depth editor Hannah Henry received an honorable mention from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in the Sidebar Writing category of their Gold Circle award. The Gold Circle award is part of an international competition.
