DGN girls' basketball is pretty in pink

The girls basketball team had their pink out game Tuesday Jan. 28. The team wore special pink jerseys and helped raise money for breast cancer.

“The girls organized the t-shirt sales and put together communication to the families in our program, students, and staff to help promote this event.” assistant varsity coach Megan Gilbert said.

Coaches vs Cancer Suits and Sneakers week is a nationwide event for basketball teams. It lasts from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2. Basketball coaches across the country all come together to raise awareness for cancer. They can do this by suiting up and dressing in the best sneakers, hence the name.

“On the day of the game, we had every girl and coach in our program participate in some way. Whether that was helping decorate the gym, selling pink shirts, or working the donation tables, everyone found a way to contribute to the cause and give back.” Gilbert said.

DGN has participated in this for 2 years, starting in 2023. This year the cafe sold pink cupcakes while the team sold custom pink shirts for the game.

“As of right now, we raised over $2500 at this event for the American Cancer Society.” Gilbert said.

For this match-up, the girls basketball team faced Naperville North. In the end DGN won 52 to 36.

“I love playing in the pink out game because it’s such a fun environment and an amazing cause to be a part of,” senior basketball player Urja Shah said.

Not only is this game for a good cause, but it also is fun for the players. They wear special pink uniforms for the game which are eye-catching and fitting.

“I always have loved the pink out game, not just because of how cool the jerseys are but also because it is such a fun game and such a great cause.” senior basketball player Celia Van Anne said.

The enthusiasm was clear on the court as well as in the stands. Many people came in support of both the cause and the team.

“It was a really fun game to watch. I can’t wait to go to more,” senior Wisin Rojas said.

Overall this event helped spread awareness and raise money for a good cause.

“I am very proud to be coaching such a great group of girls and part of such a supportive coaching staff,” Gilbert said.
