Junior Ava Gilley is on the rise as a top cross country and track runner in Illinois. In her third year, Gilley continues to impress by breaking school and personal records.
“Ava’s best asset is her energy. She brings a fun personality to practice and meets on a daily basis,” assistant girls’ track coach Timothy McDonald said.
At the Batavia Bulldogs Girls’ Invite Feb. 24, Gilley achieved a personal record in the 800-meter event, winning first place with a time of 2:17.57.
Gilley’s relay group broke the 4 x 800-meter indoor school record March 4, at the Mustang Relays. Gilley’s 800-split time was 2:13.20, another personal best. The group shattered the previously held time by over 13 seconds.
“Ava is a ferocious competitor. She comes off as an easygoing person, but when the gun goes off, she is here to win,” McDonald said.
At the 2023 IHSA State track and field meet, Gilley placed 11th in the 800-meter event. This year, she is hoping to establish herself as one of the best in the state.
“State last year was fun and a great learning experience but this year we will be more prepared,” Gilley said.
