Waking up early Thursday morning despite not having school is a common tradition for many families as they head to downtown Downers Grove for the annual Thanksgiving 5K. Community members flood Main Street in matching shirts to race, walk, socialize, and prepare for the festivities of the day at the Grove Express run.
“The event has had a positive impact on the Downers Grove community, particularly in its support of youth and education programs for elementary school District 58 and Community District 99,” social media and marketing board member Janet I. Alikpala said.
This year, the organization is appealing to the students of District 99, and making some changes. The Grove Express junior board is spearheading a DGN v DGS crosstown competition.
“If you run or even volunteer for the event, you can declare what school you go to. We will count up the total number of students involved in the race from both schools and the school with the most students will receive a trophy to display in their trophy cases,” junior board member Addie Potter said.
The junior board was created in 2022. Juniors and seniors from DGN and DGS act as ambassadors for the event at their respective schools. They use their influence and networks to spread the word about the event and encourage participation. The event boasts around 6,000 people yearly and benefits the community in more ways than one.
“Being a part of the board for the past two years has taught me a lot about teamwork, community, and family,” junior board member Gina Liu said.
For the past 20 years the money raised from the race has gone to meaningful organizations to help make a positive impact on the community.
“The Grove Express 5K offers important financial assistance to local schools. The race proceeds contribute towards educational programs, student scholarships, teacher grants, and enhancements for student training initiatives. This support is instrumental in fostering academic growth and empowering future generations,” Alikpala said.
This year, in addition to the race, there will be an Après Post Race Party at 5159 Mochel Drive where community members can connect with others, network, and relax from 8:45 AM to 10:30 AM.
“Whether you sprinted, jogged, or walked, everyone’s a winner in our community. Make sure to stay for the Après Party – we can’t wait to see you there!” Alkipala said.
