As someone who has been listening to Drake since I was 10, I get hyped every time Drake comes out with an album. To emphasize how much I love Drake, I dropped 350 dollars on nosebleed tickets to see him this summer in Chicago. To say I am just a fan is an understatement.
Although I am a huge fan, I will criticize bad music. Sorry, but Drake’s album, Honestly, Nevermind, is some of the worst Drake I have ever heard. However, “For All The Dogs” is absolutely outstanding. It’s my third favorite album, behind “Her Loss” and “Dark Lane Demo Tapes.” Drake did promise his fans that the new album would be more like “old Drake,” which is slower-paced and more singing than rapping. But there was only a select amount of songs that were really “old” Drake. I prefer “new” Drake, which is mainly his more modern hard-core style of rapping. Although, there was not a single song on the album that I did not enjoy.
What really made “For All the Dogs” memorable were the multiple features on it—famous artists such as SZA, J. Cole, Yeat, Teezo Touchdown, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Chief Keef, Bad Bunny, Sexyy Red, Lil Yachty were featured, and of course 21 Savage, who regularly drops songs with Drake and is currently on tour with him. I felt that this decision made each song have a different vibe to it that resonated with the artist he collaborated with.
My top two favorite songs are Calling For You (feat. 21 Savage) and IDGAF (feat. Yeat). Drake is my favorite rapper, but 21 Savage and Yeat are top 10 for me. I also felt that these songs are upbeat and easy to memorize since I love to spit Drake’s bars.
Overall I would rate the album 8.5/10. I have heard a majority of positive ratings, however, I know most old fans were upset with the small selection of songs that were what he had promised. If you have not heard it yet, stop what you are doing and go listen.
