Pi Day celebrated its once in a century birthday this March. The five date digits of 3/14/15 lined up with the first five digits of Pi, which are 3.1415. The first recorded celebration of Pi Day occurred in 1988 in the San Francisco Exploratorium under the direction of Larry Shaw. Since then Pi Day has spread to a large number of schools across the U.S., culminating in a non-binding resolution by the U.S House of Representatives (HRES 224) recognizing March 14 as National Pi Day.
This year senior Kelly Mallon, recited 469 digits, beating out the other contestants at this year’s annual Pi Day competition.
Prizes were also given to students who recited more than 10 digits, like extra credit and oatmeal cookies. Students and staff also received pencils and stickers in honor of Pi Day after participating in the event. Students were encouraged by their teachers to purchase the Pi Day T-shirt and bring in circular treats to celebrate this mathematical holiday.
